Airbrush Tips: Power Weapons

I've been working on a Raven Guard army for a long time now to be used for 30K and 40K. The 30K side of my army is pretty dark, realistic and gritty, while my 40K Raven Guard are much more punch and flashy.

Step 1:

Mask everything not being painted.

Note: It's probably easier to do it before you glue the arm to the model... Nothing a lot of tape can't fix ;)

Step 2:

Pick your colors. I used white, ice blue, enchanted blue and black. I generally use GW or Vallejo. Recently I discovered Vallejo Air. It's awesome. I'll never go back!

Anyway, this is an addative process, so it's usually easiest to start with the lightest color first. Then you add a stripe of ice blue.

Step 3:

Now layer the enchanted blue on top of the ice blue. The trick is to leave some ice blue on either edge of the enchanted blue stripe. Yo then do a black stripe inside the enchanted blue stripe leaving some enchanted blue on either edge.

So you are left with a gradation of white to ice blue to enchanted blue to black to enchanted blue to ice blue to white.

Step 4:

You put a piece of masking tape down the middle of blade. Re paint half the blade white and repeat steps 1 through 4. Make sure you you stagger the stripes so black is opposite white.

 Step 5:

Add a thin stripe down the middle of the blade. I usually use the edge of brush to get a really crisp even line.

Step 6:

The final product! Lots of flashy power weapons to add some color to an otherwise pretty black army.

Airbrush Tips: Small Parts

Flat pieces and small pieces were the bane of my existence to prime or to airbrush. I tried alligator clips, keeping parts on sprue, tweezers...

In the end, I found an elegant and cheap solution. I staple masking tape sticky side up to cardboard. then you push the parts onto masking tape. Small parts, wobbly parts, flat parts that used to slide or flip away.... grrrrr... stay put.

It also makes it easy to get similar light sourcing across similar parts like space marine shoulder pads.
