2018 - Las Vegas Open - Raptors

Vegas Baby!

So I finally am making it to a LVO. I've been trying to go for year, but marriage, kid, wife, life has annually screwed me out of going....

So what to bring? I've been playing a lot of Raven Guard in 8th edition and while powerful and fun, you can run into consistence problems if you load your list up to much for Alpha Strike.

Raptors however, can be built to be a BETA strike army, so it lends itself to be very consistent, which is really what you are looking for in tournaments. The major difference is Lias Issodon.

Lias Issodon:

This guys is a bad ass.

As an individual contributor, he is BS 2+ with a 30" Assault 3 S5, AP -4, d3 Dmg weapon that ignore cover and frankly he's no slouch in HTH either. But really he is an amazing force multiplier. He also basically has a cammo cloak and can do nifty things like fall back and advance and shoot.

First off, he is Chapter Master, so gives re roll hits to all units in 6". In addition, he gives all units +1 to all moves, advances, charges and fall backs, which is more dynamic than it first looks.

His big rule is Master of Ambush. He can basically deploy in reserves with 3 other units and deploy 9" away from the enemy at the beginning of any movement phase. This basically screws ALPHA strike or reserve based armies and allows you to deploy your units in perfect position.

The Tactics:

Idea behind this Raptor list is to blur the line between ALPHA and BETA strike. For BETA strike, I plan on deploying the 2 dev squads and the sternguard with Lias in Reserves. The 2 Aggressor units will deploy in the shadows and deploy after the seize the initiative role is made. The Lt and Libby will deploy high in the sky and come in as reserves.

The idea is to blast, screens with double tapping aggressor squads, then Lias and friends come hit the hard stuff. The LT can buff either the Aggressors or Lias squads depending on battle conditions and the Libby will there to hopefully stop invul saves or help Aggressors get a charge off.

Scout deploy for push back, tacs are objective campers and bikes are skirmishing scorers. Bikes are also useful to block unit movement. Speaking of which, the thunder fire cannon is basically in this list to fire tremor shells to slow down the advance of nasty units. Combined with the -1 to hit chapter trait and deplayed deployment, you can really add a lot of resilience to your list.

Short Comings:

Originally this list was Raven Guard + Raptors with Shrike charging in thunder hammer vanguard vets and deploying aggressors and Raptors beta striking with Lias. The problem is that it's hard to have enough deployment to pull off the amount of units you want to put in reserves and you also start running into LOW CPs...

Ideally, I think the stronger builds for Raptors are Battalions or Brigades and you play the range game with resilient units. Interestingly, tacs are better in cover than scouts because a scout + camo is more expensive then tacs in power armor (which I think is stupid...). You also have the option to go super shooty with Dreads as well, but they need to start on the board. I'm also not in love with the 5 man Sternguard squad. Really, you want them at 10 to use the stratagem, but I needed an Elite to fill out the brigade. I suspect, I will retool that section of the list.

In the end, I chose to go a little more killy than resilient. My dev squad are min sized and many of my units are pretty vulnerable. This might totally bite me in the ass, but their is only one way to find out... Field Test the List!

I'll let you know how my games go!
